SCULPTURE
Passage Cabin: Mobile. Jerome Kirk. 1995
The California artist, Kirk, is a contemporary of Calder
and he is considered to be the master of the vertical
mobile. This piece moves with the motion of the yacht in
heavy seas, very attractively--- unless one is prone to
mal de mare.
Salon: “ Big Day at the Races”, Dennis Clive. 1990.
This sculpture of a stylized Bugatti Type 35, was
originally commissioned by Allan Stone, the prominent New
York art dealer, for his personal collection. Mr. Clive
works only in ceramic. Everything on this piece, looking
like metal, is actually ceramic and it is accordingly
very delicate. That is why when the yacht is under way,
the sculpture is lodged within its special table for
protection.
Salon: “Minotaur”. Sophie Dickenson 2007
A powerful bronze (one of five from the mould) by this
Victoria and Albert prize winning contemporary
sculptress.
Dining Room Lobby: “Maltese Falcon”, Dennis Clive.
2004.
This sculpture was commissioned for the yacht and is
inspired by the “black bird” statuette from the 1939 film
of the Dashiell Hammett novel.
Dining Room: Glass Sculpture, John Lewis. 2005
From the 2005 International Exhibition of Glass, at the
San Francisco International Airport.
Card Room: “Judith”, Starn Twins. 1995.
Mike and Doug Starn are identical twins, and prominent
American artists known for their photography, and work in
mixed materials---in this example a commonplace wood
clamp and an image taken from Titian’s painting of Judith
with the head of Holofernes.
Lower Atrium: “Time Flies When You Are Having Fun”, T.
Perkins. 2005.
The aluminum base is by Eamon Fulalove. The log is of
yew wood, some 900 years old. The tree was lost in the
Sussex hurricane of 1987 when the storm passed through
the owner’s estate.
Lower Atrium: "Silver Shark". Emmanuel Chapalain. 2006.
This shark seems to be swimming in an aquarium around the
central mast---and at first glance he is quite fearsome--
-but don't worry, his pressure gauges are on empty! This
delightful piece was made by a young artist from
Pornichet France, and it was acquired at the ' 06 Perini
Cup in Porto Rotondo, Sardinia (the same day the Falcon
won the cup).
PICTURES
Atrium: “Swimming Pool Scene”, Lorraine Shemesh. 1994
This picture is among the first of the “painted pool”
series by Ms. Shemesh, an artist now world renowned for
the genre.
Card Room: “The Wonder Tub”, Bo Bartlett. 1990.
Mr. Bartlett is an American artist whose paintings are
frequently on loan to museums. His work, at first
glance, seems non-controversial. But, a closer
examination reveals tremendous inner tension.
Card Room: Abstract, Kazuko Inoue. 1991.
Ms. Inoue works mostly in abstract oil, and is frequently
exhibited in the New York gallery of Allan Stone.
Writing Room: “Lifeboat” Bo Bartlett. 2000.
Again, Bartlett challenges the viewer. Aren’t the waves
dangerously big? Is that a wedding ring on a string
around the youth’s neck; a shark hidden in the wave?
Writing Room: Central Wall: “Superman”, Gordon Smedt.
2004.
Mr. Smedt is intrigued by the Superman theme. This
picture is among the largest he has painted. He exhibits
at the Steel gallery in San Francisco, and this painting
is a gift from Danielle Steel.
Writing Room: Aft Wall: Abstract, Caio Fonseca. 1995
Mr. Fonseca is a prominent American artist, working
primarily in the themes of geometrical abstraction.
Owner’s Stateroom: Center Aft Wall: “What Is Red”,
Squeak Carnwarth. 1996
Ms. Carnwarth is a professor of art at the University of
California. She is highly acclaimed and has won numerous
prizes.
Owner’s Stateroom Aft Walls Port and Starboard: Two Self
Portraits by Kurt Trompedach 1990 and 1994.
Living and working in France, Mr. Trompedach is probably
the most famous living Danish born artist In the
portrait of the artist as a child, the Danish nursery
rhyme (translated) is written: “Now I Lay Me Down To
Sleep”. Images of a child’s nightmares are scattered
throughout.
Owner’s Stateroom: Central wall Forward: Abstract,
Robert Baribeau, 1996.
Baribeau is a very well known American abstractionist,
and the winner of many awards.
Owner’s Stateroom Forward Wall, Starboard: Self
Portrait, Desmond Houghton. 1995
This picture won the Tate Gallery (London) National
Portraiture Competition, in the year it was painted.
Owner’s Stateroom Forward Wall, Port: Untitled, Ian
Green, 1996
The central figure is a photograph. The subject is
strange and compelling, albeit rather dark. The artist
lives in San Francisco, South of Market St, in a
dangerous neighborhood.
Owner’s Dressing Room: Abstract, Kazuko Inoue. 1994.
This is large work by Ms. Inoue, the same artist whose
abstract is mounted in the Card Room. [In fairness to
the artist, the owner confesses that her picture is
mounted on its side in its present location].
Gymnasium: Automobiles, Harold Cleworth. Various, early
‘80’s.
The artist is noted for his “super realist” oils of
automobiles. These were commissioned by the owner of his
favorite supercharged sports cars from his collection.
Passage Cabin: “Witness---The Women and the Gun” Dick
(Richard) Lethem, 1991
Violent, but somehow humorous, The artist is relatively
unknown.
Remarks
MALTESE FALCON represents a true break through in
yachting with her unstayed carbon fiber rotating “Falcon
Rig” and unique fully retractable sails on custom Perini
built carbon fiber yards with the sails coming out of and
disappearing into the carbon masts.
